The Clinical Study of Endoscopic Sclerotherapy in Active Esophagogastric Variceal Bleeding

Abstract
To evaluate the efficacy or impact of sclerotherapy in therapeutic regimen of bleeding esophageal varix, retrospective clinical analysis was made during period of 2 years from June of 1983 to June of 1985 at Hae Wha Hospital, Korea University Medical School. 71 cases with esophageal variceal bleeding were selected for clinical analysis. There were 63 cases(88.7%) of variceal bleeding due to liver cirrhosis, and 8 cases(11.3%) of hepatoma. Effectiveness of sclerotherapy was depended on anatomic site of bleeding and amount of transfusion. Lower and middle esophageal variceal bleeding were more effectively responded to sclerotherapy(100%), compared with cardiac and cardioesophageal junction 89.2% and 95.8% respectively. If total transfusion amount was over 10 pints, patients were less respor_ded to sclerotherapy. Ethanolamine alone was the most effective and success rate was 100%, which was followed by ethanolamine with separately injected thrombin (91. 7%0), thrombin alone(89.7,00) and thrombin and ethanolamine mixture (71. 4%).
